DEVELOPMEN OF LATVIAN NATIONAL VISA INFORMATION SYSTEM

Project Objective: Create an area of freedom, security and justice in the European Union by ensuring free movement of individuals and high level of safety and security. Establishing a Visa Information System plays a prominent role as it ensures exchange of Schengen visa information among the EU countries as well as common visa policy and consular co-operation.

Underlying Objectives: Establish the national Visa Information System that would support the basic visa issuance functions, process biometric information of visa applicants, exchange information with the Central EU Visa System and other information systems (Schengen Information System, the Integrated Migration Information System), provide capabilities for internal and external consultation in the visa issuance process.

Tasks:

  • N-VIS software development that would ensure issuance of visas in accordance with the Common Consular Instructions;
  • Procurement of N-VIS-related equipment;
  • Procurement of equipment for gathering and processing of biometric information;
  • Testing and implementing N-VIS;
  • Training system users and managing media coverage.


Results:

N-VIS that ensures visa issuance in accordance with legislation of the EU and Latvia; provides convenient way to process visa applications and individual biometric information; facilitates decision making with respect to visa issuance at the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as at the diplomatic missions of the Republic of Latvia abroad, at border crossings and at OCMA offices.
