ABOUT EUROPEAN MIGRATION NETWORK
The Council of Europe adopted a decision in 14 May 2008Nr.2008/381/EC, establishing a European Migration Network.
The European Migration Network (EMN) is web-based information exchange system, which main objective is to provide the European Community with objective, reliable and comparable information in the field of migration and asylum, systematically collecting and keeping data and information received from the Member States, as well as carrying out research and analysis of that information.
To achieve the objective, the European Migration Network (EMN):
- collects actual and reliable data and information from different sources and exchanges existing data and information;
- analyses the before mentioned data and information and provides them in readily accessible format;
- in cooperation with other structures of the European Union contributes to the elaboration of indicators and criteria in order to improve the consistency of information and to elaborate the actions of the Community related to migration statistics;
- on a regular basis prepares and publishes the reports on the migration and asylum situation in the Community and Member States;
- creates and maintains internet-based information exchange system accessible to the public providing the access to relevant documents and publications on migration and asylum;
- extends the information about the EMN making accessible collected and stored existing data and information and distributing the EMN’s performance results unless such information is classified (confidential);
- coordinates the information exchange and cooperates with other relevant European structures and international authorities.
The EMN provides that its operation is persistent and coordinated with relevant Community’s instruments and structures involved in the migration and asylum area.
The EMN is composed of a network of national contact points designated by the Member States and the European Commission. To facilitate the EMN’s operation and to provide the achievement of its objectives, the National Contact Point consists at least of three experts, who have common experience in the migration and asylum area, including the aspects of policy-making, legislation, researches and statistics.
